COMMENTARY | Since his election in 2008, I’ve seen the most amazingly specious accusations against President Barack Obama fly. For a short time there, I bought into it, too. But after the simple act of looking to see who really said, or did what, I truly believe he may not be as terrible of a guy as I once had convinced myself.
Obama’s not at war with religion. He just had the sense to respectfully recognize those of faiths other than only Christianity. Just Friday he and his closest circle of trust joined together to host a White House Hanukah celebration, as reported on the White House blog, to acknowledge the contributions of American Jews through the years. Does this make him un-Christian? If I’m not mistaken, I distinctly remember repeatedly hearing “Jesus was a Jew,” throughout my own Baptist upbringing.
In the now meme-tastic “strong” ad from hopeful candidate Rick Perry on his campaign’s YouTube channel he claimed, “As president, I’ll end Obama’s war on religion.” But Perry apparently failed to remember something again. President Obama was lambasted at the onset of his presidency for having attended the church of one Jeremiah Wright — a Christian church. Just because a preacher is harshly critical of America’s various policies, is that what causes a church to lose its Christian status? Politics and religion are not mutually exclusive. Let’s be honest here.
And of course, who couldn’t notice all of the hullabaloo making its rounds this time of year — again — about allegations of President Obama refusing to call the White House Christmas tree a Christmas tree. This tired, old, debunked rumor has been floating around since 2009, according to FactCheck.org. Not only did the Christmas tree arrive the day after Thanksgiving, Michelle Obama chose a theme honoring the military group “Blue Star Families.”
So please, America, consider looking into the validity of rumors and accusations before you go repeating them to your friends and family, whether it’s on Facebook or anywhere else. Learn to do your own thinking before buying into every specious charge against President Obama so readily. It saddens me to see the people of the greatest nation on Earth so easily incensed.
If it’s your choice to elect a different president in 2012 on the issues, fine. But buying into the rumor-mill and gossip — you’re only making yourselves look foolish.
